Solihull College are hosting this exciting event aimed at informing young people about the wide range of career opportunities available in the sectors of construction and engineering. This will include talks from key industry professionals, information about courses at Solihull College, ‘have-a-go’ taster sessions, university representation and tours of the brand new facilities.

What’s in it for me?

Construction & Civil Engineering

  • The sector is forecast to grow by 2% per annum, or better, over the next decade with 200,000 more employment opportunities expected to arise.
  • Civil Engineering graduates average starting salary in 2012 was £26,545, with two thirds being in employment within 6 months of graduation and 92% being in employment or further education
  • The Construction industry Training Board’s ‘West Midlands Skills report (2012-2016)’ identifies a need to recruit an additional 3,730 skilled workers per annum within the Construction and Civil Engineering sector in the West Midlands alone.

Engineering

  • Demand for graduates in Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering is expected to outstrip supply with an estimated 100,000 new engineering graduates required each year to meet demand
  • The sector is suffering from a shortage of highly skilled workers and forecasts a requirement to recruit an additional 80,000 new workers by 2020
  • Currently, 45% of the workforce is educated to Level 3, and over 30% are educated to degree level, however, the demand for skilled workers educated to degree level is set to exceed 40% by 2020
  • graduate engineers start on an average of £21,000 per annum in the West Midlands, increasing to an average of over £50,000 with experience.
